Thomas Steel
Thomas Steel served three tours as a private in the North Carolina Militia.
Beginning July 1, 1780, he served three months under Captain Joseph Johnson and
Colonel Ambrose Ramsey. He was in the battle of Camden, SC, in August. Early in
January 1781, he began a three-month service under Captain Edward Douglas and
Colonel Littrel. He was under the command of General Green's Army at the battle
of Guilford Court House, NC. Beginning October 1, 1781, he served three months
under Captain Edward Douglas and Colonel O'Neal. Steel was credited with taking
seven or eight Tories prisoner.
Certificate #80183 was issued to Thomas Steel at the rate of $30.00 per annum
by act of June 7, 1832, North Carolina Agency Pension 587603.
Steel was born March 1757 in Pennsylvania. He died in Chatham County, NC, on
December 17, 1838. He was married in 1775 to Sarah (last name unknown). Their
daughter Sarah married Elisha Buckner, son of Jesse Buckner, who was another
Revolutionary War patriot.
