John Snyder, Sr.
John Snyder, Sr. was a private in the Revolution serving as a wagon driver.
In January 1776 he was in the 1st Regiment Continental Troops, under Captain C.
Craig's Company. He was in the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment under Captain John
Huling's Company, 2nd Penn Battalion of Continental Forces commanded by Arthur
St Clair from March 1 to August 1, 1776. In May 1777 he enlisted again for a
tour of six months to drive a Continental Army wagon. The wagons were loaded
with supplies and food for the horses and men. Under General Thomas Gregg he
drove the wagon that contained the medical supplies of Dr. Letley. During
another mission he drove the wagon for the piquet guard and was nearly captured
near the battle of Brandywine. In 1778 he was again in the service for a duty of
six months duration as a wagon driver for the Continental Army.
In 1834 John Snyder applied for a pension for his Revolutionary War service.
His claim was rejected by the War Department because he "Served as
Wagoner."
John Snyder, Sr. was born October 18, 1757, in Northampton County, PA. He died
July 31, 1850, at Snydertown, Centre County, PA. He was married in 1779 to Anna
Margaret Lowald. Anna Margaret was born July 1, 1758, in Northampton County, PA, and
died at Snydertown, Centre County, PA, on May 18, 1842. They were the parents of
nine children.
